You can also check for frothy oil on the oil dipstick for possible internal leaks
Fluid leaks: Green, orange (rusty coolant), or red-colored coolant may leak out when water pump components develop cracks or wear out. Abnormal noises: A loose accessory belt, pulley, or worn-out bearings in the water pump cause squealing and whining engine sounds, especially when accelerating.
Radiator steam: Steam billows from the engine as the coolant can’t circulate in an overheated radiator when the water pump malfunctions. It’s usually indicated by an engine temperature warning light or elevated engine temperature reading on the dashboard. High coolant temperature: The engine heats up without a good water pump, leading to high coolant temperatures. Here are a few signs to help you spot a water pump malfunction: As a result, a water pump malfunction is a serious issue as you’ll be looking at overheating, premature wear, and severe damage to vital car parts. The pump prevents engine overheating by continuously circulating coolant from the radiator to the engine. I'm driving it now because I had to haul my tool box to my new job.The water pump replacement cost should not deter you from considering the service. I only drive the Jeep on rare occasions, it's my secondary vehicle. I plan to do an engine swap to a small block in a few years so I don't think it will be the end of the world.
I might just go with the high mileage yellow/orange coolant and call it a day. BUT, under the hood there is a plastic tab on the coolant bottle saying special coolant is required. The manual only calls for max protection coolant. The radiator was changed by a shop my dad brought it to in 2010 so does this mean I need the HOAT coolant or does that not affect anything with changing it? I know in 97' they did not use HOAT coolant. Is there anything I need to be aware of before tackling this project? Is the pump reverse threaded or were they normal thread in 97'? Also anything I need to keep in mind when I flush the system? Any special tools required for any of the removal/install? I have a copy of the service manual but I realize the manual doesn't account for the unexpected. I have all the supplies, including thermostat, gaskets, new water pump, thermo housing, lower and upper hoses, drive belt, flush kit, and the coolant. I've pretty much narrowed in on the water pump. So, my Jeep has been leaking coolant and overheating due to that.
